I Smile at Pain (and so can you)
Yesterday at the gym I thought about something that caused me discomfort. Not a big deal, but something that was a little unsettling. It inspired another thought that made me feel a whole lot better. Maybe it will do the same for you.
Often when I’m thinking - in a relaxed allowing state, free from self recrimination I find the complicated parts of my life unraveling.
I come up on a problem, some part of my present that’s not at ease. I see the error of thought, emotion or behavior. There’s discomfort, maybe even pain. It’s laid out clear as day.
And I smile.
When confronted with the thorny part of their lives many people will furrow their brows, curse their luck and otherwise react negatively. They feel powerless before their problems. They allow themselves to be victims.
I enjoy understanding my problems. Once a pattern makes sense to me, even a bad one I instantly feel better. I can choose to alter that pattern, quickly or slowly. Or I can choose to live with it for the time being and turn my attention to things that are more important to me in the moment.
Or I can even decide to live with it altogether and celebrate my perfect imperfection.
But knowledge is the beginning of power. It’s the gateway we can cross…quickly, slowly or not at all.
When we smile at our pain we honor ourselves and our glorious self-awareness regardless of any other circumstances.
Got some pain? Bless it. See it as a growth experience.
Get quiet and breathe into it.
And watch it magically bless you back.

P.S. Please don’t confuse understanding the pattern of pain with sitting for hours on end, trying to understand the “why” of it. That’s the worst kind of hell I know of, and one many counselors are guilty of perpetuating (I’m a certified counselor, so I’m allowed to say that). As I tell my coaching clients, the why’s usually come to the surface…very gently when you surrender the effort to understand.
P.P.S. If you haven’t gotten on my newsletter at http://NoMoreHoldingBack.com yet, this is the right time to do so. Got some groups that will be forming next mont
