I Smile at Pain (and so can you)

Yesterday at the gym I thought about something that caused me discomfort. Not a big deal, but something that was a little unsettling. It inspired another thought that made me feel a whole lot better. Maybe it will do the same for you.

Often when I’m thinking - in a relaxed allowing state, free from self recrimination I find the complicated parts of my life unraveling.

I come up on a problem, some part of my present that’s not at ease. I see the error of thought, emotion or behavior. There’s discomfort, maybe even pain. It’s laid out clear as day.

And I smile.

When confronted with the thorny part of their lives many people will furrow their brows, curse their luck and otherwise react negatively. They feel powerless before their problems. They allow themselves to be victims.

I enjoy understanding my problems. Once a pattern makes sense to me, even a bad one I instantly feel better. I can choose to alter that pattern, quickly or slowly. Or I can choose to live with it for the time being and turn my attention to things that are more important to me in the moment.

Or I can even decide to live with it altogether and celebrate my perfect imperfection.

But knowledge is the beginning of power. It’s the gateway we can cross…quickly, slowly or not at all.

When we smile at our pain we honor ourselves and our glorious self-awareness regardless of any other circumstances.

Got some pain? Bless it. See it as a growth experience.

Get quiet and breathe into it.

And watch it magically bless you back.

P.S. Please don’t confuse understanding the pattern of pain with sitting for hours on end, trying to understand the “why” of it. That’s the worst kind of hell I know of, and one many counselors are guilty of perpetuating (I’m a certified counselor, so I’m allowed to say that). As I tell my coaching clients, the why’s usually come to the surface…very gently when you surrender the effort to understand.

The Things That Move Us

So there I am, at my usual gym spot, on the eliptical machine. Sweating away, keeping my heart rate in a good place, enjoying the endorphin rush. Cell phone, water bottle and towel safely tucked in the holder.

When I’m done I head for the men’s locker room for the usual shave and shower. Sweat soaked t-shirt comes off and shaving cream comes out of the bag. All is right with the world.

Then the thought hits me - “you left your cell phone in the machine again, didn’t you?”

I check my locker. Yup…sure did.

It’s a pretty safe environment, this gym I go to. More than likely if I leave my cell phone in the machine it’ll still be there when I get back.

Then again…I’m traveling to Texas tomorrow to train at a seminar. This is NOT the time to take a chance on being cell phone-less.

So I swallow and perform my gruesome deed for the day. The t-shirt, which is soaked through with sweat from twenty minutes of high intensity cardio goes back on.

All together now….”EWWWWWWWWW!!!!!”

Sure enough the cell phone is where I left it. I pick it up, encounter the guy who was about to bring it to the front desk and return to the locker room. I peel the shirt off just as quickly as I can.

I laugh to myself.
Will I ever learn to take better care of my cell phone at this moment?

Well, not so far. And I know why…

I have not been properly motivated to change my behavior. We all know there are two things that move us…desire for a positive outcome or fear of a negative one.

And as most of us know, fear is the more powerful motivator of the two.

But the fear needs to be sufficient to get us to move. So far fear of having to put on a disgusting t shirt hasn’t been enough of a motivator. And the gym is a secure enough environment that fear of losing the cell phone to a thief hasn’t kicked in.

Of course if I was expecting an important call on that phone it would have stayed in my attention. Or if I had previously had a phone stolen my motivation level would have been a lot higher.

NOW, let’s talk about YOU…

You’re here because there’s something in your life you want to be different. You want to move toward something amazing, or away from something you fear.

What conditions can you create that will motivate you enough to keep your goal in your consciousness?

Do you have to raise your own personal stakes? Some kind of decision or commitment from which there is no return?

Do you need to get a picture of yourself succeeding wildly or failing miserably with what you currently do? Is that enough to put your butt in gear - and keep it there?

Will a supportive community (such as this one) give you the inspiration and accountability it takes? Will an individual coach or mentor be something that tilts the scale in your favor? Will putting energy on the line, in the form of money, self esteem or your reputation be a strong enough motivator?

Whatever it is…there’s a formula that will work for you. Find it. Use it.

And make sure the thing you want is worth the commitment and energy you choose to put in.

Tim Russert

I was on the phone with one of my coaching clients yesterday.
She told me Tim Russert had died, which I had found out a few
minutes before we started speaking.

Now this is a great lady, this coaching client of mine.  Strong,
healthy, a good person.  And she was nervous about Tim Russert
dying because the two of them were in the same general age
group.  I heard the wheels turning, “Could I be next?”

There is a world of difference between my friend and Tim Russert.
I don’t know anything about his personal life, but from the pictures
they showed he didn’t seem like he was in the best of shape.
And I have to imagine the kind of schedule he kept up caused a
lot of stress.

And the stuff he dealt with on a day to day basis…the negativity
of a news environment - I don’t imagine that being too good for
anyone on a spiritual level.

Compare that with my friend…a marathon runner, in a good financial
place, in a stable relationship.  Night and day.

So why is my client thinking in these terms?  Well, that’s why
she’s my client…to change the way she thinks.  And of course,
that will allow all kinds of other stuff she’d like to have happen
into her life.

One other thing…she has some fear she’s going to die.
She’s right.  She is going to die.  So am I.  So are you.

But isn’t it the quality of the life we’re given the thing we want
to focus on?  I don’t know much about Tim Russert, but I’m guessing
he had a good time on the whole.  He seemed to be doing the thing
he loved.  He checked out a little early, but I’m guessing if he
were around, he’d tell  you he’d do the same thing over again.

It reminds me of the line from The Shawshank Redemption:
“Get Busy Living, or Get Busy Dying.”

Looks to me like Tim Russert lived right up until he died.

What about you?  Are you busy living your dreams or making
plans for an unfulfilled exit?

Start living.  Today.  Not tomorrow.  Now.
