Back, and Lovin’ It!

Just back from the HOW TO CREATE A LIFE WORTH LIVING WORKSHOP. I’ve been saying it was in Austin, but the truth is that is was in Lakeway, Texas. Big difference. This wasn’t an urban setting…this was on Lake Travis. Absolutely magnificent. I’ll have video up in a few days so you can take a look.

There’s lots I can say about it - and I will. The opportunities we all have to create the emotions that pop up in our lives, how we choose our circumstances day and and day out, how much CONTROL we really have if we care to exercise it, how to fix our finances, our relationships, our businesses, our careers…

I’m going to talk about all of that.

But not right now.

Right now I’m going to talk about Texas barbecue!

Yes, I’m a food hound, in case you hadn’t noticed. One of my priorities for the last day - when I had to return the rental car and get to the airport was to find authentic Texas BBQ and chow down.

And I did it!

The Green Mesquite seems to be as authentic as they come. Well, there was a roadside dive on Route 71 that looked pretty good too. It was a barbecue/trading post, so that’s hard to argue with. Missed the turn off though.

The Green Mesquite was in a shopping center, along with a McDonalds, and a sushi house. Well, it is 2008. It seemed authentic though. Cool stuff on the walls, just like you’d see in Chili’s or Applebee’s. There were business cards on the table, and a display for Yoga instruction by the cash register. Not very “authentic Texan,” but again this IS 2008.

I got there at 11:18 on a Saturday morning, not exactly prime time for BBQ. So I had the place to myself for a little while. Shvonne gave me a menu, although I knew I wanted pulled pork. They were out, so I settled for beef with sides of fried okra and green beans and a tall iced tea.

The food came out quickly. Now THAT’S what I’M talkin’ about! Big ol’ sandwich, the green beans were just the right color, and the okra was so good…it didn’t seem like okra, if you know what I mean.

I read the Austin Chronicle, a left leaning weekly paper while I chowed down. Some pecan pie for dessert and I was ready to hit the road.

I kept a copy of the take out menu - which has the Green Mesquite’s website ( http://greenmesquite. net ) and went on my way.

A Texas BBQ joint with a website? Like I said, it IS 2008. Adapt or die.

And you know what? I don’t care if it was next to a sushi place. This was authentic Texas BBQ. I could taste it. The trappings are only so important. At the end of it, it comes down to the taste.

The world around us moves on. The only constant is change.

Why shouldn’t they have a website? Why shouldn’t they serve Merlot and Shirraz with fried catfish?

Life happens.

Which side of the curve do you want to be on?

Thank you Shvonne, Ross and the crew at the Green Mesquite. If you’re ever up in Connecticut let me take you to my favorite place for New England Clam Chowder.

OK, so it’s Chili’s.

Your Pal,
Larry

The Things That Move Us

July 23, 2008 by Larry · Leave a Comment

So there I am, at my usual gym spot, on the eliptical machine. Sweating away, keeping my heart rate in a good place, enjoying the endorphin rush. Cell phone, water bottle and towel safely tucked in the holder.

When I’m done I head for the men’s locker room for the usual shave and shower. Sweat soaked t-shirt comes off and shaving cream comes out of the bag. All is right with the world.

Then the thought hits me - “you left your cell phone in the machine again, didn’t you?”

I check my locker. Yup…sure did.

It’s a pretty safe environment, this gym I go to. More than likely if I leave my cell phone in the machine it’ll still be there when I get back.

Then again…I’m traveling to Texas tomorrow to train at a seminar. This is NOT the time to take a chance on being cell phone-less.

So I swallow and perform my gruesome deed for the day. The t-shirt, which is soaked through with sweat from twenty minutes of high intensity cardio goes back on.

All together now….”EWWWWWWWWW!!!!!”

Sure enough the cell phone is where I left it. I pick it up, encounter the guy who was about to bring it to the front desk and return to the locker room. I peel the shirt off just as quickly as I can.

I laugh to myself.
Will I ever learn to take better care of my cell phone at this moment?

Well, not so far. And I know why…

I have not been properly motivated to change my behavior. We all know there are two things that move us…desire for a positive outcome or fear of a negative one.

And as most of us know, fear is the more powerful motivator of the two.

But the fear needs to be sufficient to get us to move. So far fear of having to put on a disgusting t shirt hasn’t been enough of a motivator. And the gym is a secure enough environment that fear of losing the cell phone to a thief hasn’t kicked in.

Of course if I was expecting an important call on that phone it would have stayed in my attention. Or if I had previously had a phone stolen my motivation level would have been a lot higher.

NOW, let’s talk about YOU…

You’re here because there’s something in your life you want to be different. You want to move toward something amazing, or away from something you fear.

What conditions can you create that will motivate you enough to keep your goal in your consciousness?

Do you have to raise your own personal stakes? Some kind of decision or commitment from which there is no return?

Do you need to get a picture of yourself succeeding wildly or failing miserably with what you currently do? Is that enough to put your butt in gear - and keep it there?

Will a supportive community (such as this one) give you the inspiration and accountability it takes? Will an individual coach or mentor be something that tilts the scale in your favor? Will putting energy on the line, in the form of money, self esteem or your reputation be a strong enough motivator?

Whatever it is…there’s a formula that will work for you. Find it. Use it.

And make sure the thing you want is worth the commitment and energy you choose to put in.

Your Friend,
Larry

Why Wayne Dyer Isn’t Knocking At Your Door.

What was your first car?  You know, the one you learned to drive on?
Chances are pretty good it wasn’t a Lotus Esprit.  Or a Porsche Carrera.  Or a Lambourghini Diablo.  Or even a Mercedes S500.
Depending on how old you are, good chance it was a Hyundai.  Or a Saturn.  Or even a Plymouth Duster (yes, I’m dating myself).
And in all likelihood your first real ride wasn’t one of these either.  The one you took to school, or on the weekends.
Or maybe it was.  Maybe your family had the means to put you behind the wheel of a hot ride at a young age.  If so, God Bless!!!
But answer honestly…was it a little intimidating being in that position?  Would knowing you were a new driver behind the wheel of a serious piece of machinery have been just a little hard to handle?
Would have been for me.  Of course, that 1976 Chevy Vega was just inside my comfort zone.  :)
Accessibilty.
The Universe has a funny way of giving us about what we are ready to handle at any given moment.
And it has a funny way of taking away what we aren’t ready to handle.
For most of us, that’s why Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield and Wayne Dyer aren’t showing up on our doorsteps to provide an hour of one on one coaching.
And it’s why Kim Ades and Larry Hochman aren’t doing so either.
But it may be why you’re reading their books, or studying their videos, or attending their seminars, or even looking at their free stuff.
It may be why you’re doing the same with us.
There are levels of readiness for all of us.  No one is right or wrong.  Engaging your ego and lamenting what you don’t have…what you aren’t ready for blocks the insight, clarity and new skills of what you ARE ready for.
Newbie?  Welcome aboard!
Jump into the driver’s seat of that Ferrari.  Smell the leather.  Fire up the engine!
Then jump out.  Climb into that Chevy, happily, gratefully, joyfully.
Or get on the bus, if that’s where you are.
And get ready for the ride of your life!

What Do You Call The Person Who Graduates Last In His Medical School Class?

July 18, 2008 by Larry · Leave a Comment
Filed under: No More Holding Back
Well, what do you call that person?
We spend much of our lives in a state of homeostasis, or trying to keep a balance of where we think we’re supposed to be.
Think of a thermostat. It’s set at a certain temperature. If the room gets too cold, the heater comes on. Warm air is pumped in until the room is goes back to the thermostat setting. If there’s a cooling unit, same thing happens when the room gets too warm.
That’s homeostasis.
Human beings, especially in their interactions with others have that same mechanism. We have a set point for our lives, and for our dealings with the significant people in our lives. When things get too hot for our comfort level, we cool them down. If they cool down too much, we turn up the heat. Balance is restored - at least our own personal version of balance.
Now some of us - especially the wise, ambitious far-sighted people reading this story - want to grow. Even when the forces around us pull back to our current reality, we still have that desire for more.
The discomfort of breaking out of our little box kicks in.
But so does what Eric Butterworth calls Divine Dissatisfaction. “Dammit, I’m supposed to be doing more!”
You may be in that place. I’m often in that place. Someone who I love dearly is in that place right now.
There’s a saying many of the modern day sages use, and it may be the right one for you to hear right now…
“You don’t have to get it right. You just have to get it going.”
My dear friend wants to get it right. She is SO blessed with wisdom and love it makes her crazy to not express all of it.
I hear you.
Please understand this: the Universe supports those who make a commitment to their dreams, even when things seem way out of balance.
And our institutions - family, workplace, soccer leagues etc. - can be surprisingly flexible when it comes to supporting people who want change.
The ones that aren’t? Don’t worry. You’ll either overpower them, or move on.
You’ll stumble, fall, get scraped up…
…and find those who are moving in your direction and receive love and comfort from them.
You don’t have to get it right. You just have to get it going.
So what do you call the person who graduated last in his class from medical school?
Doctor.
With Love,
Larry

Who is Rod Temperton, and What Can He Teach You About Miracles?

July 17, 2008 by Larry · Leave a Comment

Rod Temperton….not a household name, though you’ve almost definitely heard his voice.

Yes, the lead singer of the disco group Heatwave from the 1970’s. He sang lead on “Boogie Nights” and “Always and Forever.” Two songs that left a mark on their time. A & F continues to be a popular wedding song.

Very nice. Rod’s got his legacy.

NOW…those two songs are NOT Rod’s main contribution to pop music. Not even close.

Question: Who sang the hit song, Thriller?
Answer: Michael Jackson, of course.

Question: Who WROTE the hit song, Thriller?
Answer: Rod Temperton

Yeah, Rod might have chosen to put that song out himself, or with Heatwave. And it might have been a modest hit, although Rod didn’t seem to have the scary kind of voice needed for Thriller.

So what did he do? He handed off the ball to the King of Pop. Look what happened.

Collaboration. Synergy. Putting one’s ego in check.

Letting everyone do what they’re best at.

Then standing back and watching some amazing things happen.

What do YOU have that, when put together with other complimentary talents, creates magic?

Don’t worry about what you DON’T have. Someone is not only going to see your genius, they’re going to help you bring stuff out YOU didn’t even know was there.

Find your mentor. Find your partner. Stay open to the collaborative process.

Co-create some miracles.

Your Pal,
Larry

Sexual Transmutation

July 16, 2008 by Larry · Leave a Comment

I was giving the keynote address at a leadership award ceremony here in Connecticut. Among the people at my table was a Catholic priest. It was very interesting to be around his energy.

He was a hearty guy with a lot of zest for living. Assuming he has no direct outlet for his sexual energy, he’s sure putting it elsewhere. I felt sensuality in the way he was talking with others, including myself. It was in the cadence of his words and the look in his eyes. You could feel life energy coming from him. It was cool.

The whole experience reminded me of what Napoleon Hill has the say about sexual transmutation in Think and Grow Rich. Those among us who have manifested the most stuff often have the strongest sex drives. And many who do choose to transfer that energy to other aspects of their existence. Spirituality, the pursuit of career or financial goals, sports, etc.

Seems as if my priest pal did the same. I find my own energy at a very high place most of the time, and it makes me wonder (a bit) how I come across to the outside world.

What about your energy? Are you putting out a frequency that’s in alignment with who you really are? If you haven’t read it yet, and you’ve got stuff you want to make happen, you definitely want to pick up a copy of Think And Grow Rich.

Transmutationally Yours,
Larry
